It pays to to it right since registered service marks are forever as long as they are in use. The registration of a service mark is not very expensive. The USPTO offical fee is $325. It pays to do it right. Cola Cola is at least 120 years old. Ideas are not in themselves patentable. The object of an idea may be. That is much more expensive and time consuming. There is a $100M+ a year legitimately getting patents of no value. Only 1 in 10,000 get back more than they pay.
